In 2020, I was brought in to help imagine the future of ESPN+ as part of the Disney Streaming bundle. Initially, ESPN’s reputation was fragmented between a cable channel, a sports news outlet, an expanded live sports portfolio (ESPN+), and their most popular program, SportsCenter. As Disney evolved their streaming strategy, a vision for ESPN+ quickly turned to a vision for ESPN. I oversaw the motion UX design support of sports content and infrastructure in Star+ (Latin American Disney+) as a pilot program for sports and SVOD content to be co-housed under one product.
The success from that program influenced Disney to rollout the pilot internationally and replace Star+ with ESPN on Disney+ including live sports globally and ultimately supporting the ESPN flagship standalone application in consistency in design standards and patterns. Ranked #1 Sports app on Apple and Android, ESPN boasts 120 million active monthly users and 24 million subscribers, up from 2.5 million in 2019. For the first time ever, ESPN will host the NFL Super Bowl in 2027, streaming on ESPN and ABC live on Disney+.
